Travis Snider gives the Orioles another left-handed hitting outfielder but David Lough should still be part of the Orioles' 2015 plans.
In the starting pitching entry of this series, we go with a bit different format in assessing what the Orioles will need from their starters in order to succeed this season. This is a group lacking a true star but with quality in spots #1 all the way through #6. As other teams - notably the 2013 Cleveland Indians - have show, sometimes that is enough for a postseason berth.
Unlike some of the other positions on the infield – most notably first base and third base – the Orioles have a bit more depth behind their all-star caliber starter at short.
Once you get passed Manny Machado, the picture at third base gets really blurry, really fast. Unfortunately, the Orioles might need that picture to come into focus sooner rather than later given that Machado is not a sure bet to be ready by Opening Day.
If healthy, there is little reason to doubt that Chris Davis will once again be the cornerstone of the Orioles offense in 2014, even factoring his likely regression from his ridiculous 2013 numbers. The Orioles better hope Davis stays on the field, because there is little quality first base depth behind him.
Over the next few weeks, we will go around the diamond and take a position by position look at the Orioles organization. First up is catcher. With Matt Wieters setup for an offensive bounce back after a down 2013 season and a pair of capable backups in Steve Clevenger and Johnny Monell, the Orioles are better positioned behind the plate at the upper levels of the organization than in recent years.
The deadline to move players to the 40-man roster and keep them ineligible from December's Rule-5 draft came at midnight.
